completed one year of commuting by cycle in Mumbai

I am very happy to post this message:  I completed one year of commuting to office in Mumbai.  I cycle regularly from TIFR Colaba to  Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education near Anushakti Nagar Bus depot.  The round trip is about 52km.  On an average I take about 1hr 15min for each trip.  My best timing so far was 1hr 5min.   I did this in all seasons.

I ride Trek 7100 (hybrid).  So far I had two punctures on the rear wheel.  Considering that I covered so many miles, this I think is very good.  The cycle gave no problems at all.  Only thing that I replaced so far are the break rubbers.

Another thing I must mention, is that after I started cycling, inspiration from Shekhar and VK, five more colleagues from my office have purchased cycles.

Hope more people who use cars and motor cycles in the city for commuting will join us.

Hi Nagarjuna..congrates for your achievement..doing one day long rides is a different thing and doing something consistently over a period of time that too for a year is a achievement...!!..

Hi Nagarjuna, it is so nice to know that you are a biker too. Congratulations on your successful year of cycling. I started cycling after many years from April 2012. My longest distance covered is 25 kms. Initially Mehul Ved who has already clocked more than 25,000 Kms helped me with some queries and doubts that I had about cycling in Mumbai city. I have a BSA Mach City and use it for cycling every week day for 1 hour early in the morning. On Sundays, the time and distance is more. It is so addictive. The quality of my bike has also helped me get better at bike repairs and service. During the day I visit different places so cannot use my bike as it gets too hot and sweaty in office clothing. Formal pants get damaged in the seat area after some time. Parking outside others' premises is also a problem. Cycling has made me get up early every day and ride in the beautiful mornings with sounds of chirping birds. Anyway, nice reading about your experiences and great going. All the best. BTW, is JTD also into cycling?

Thanks for sharing your experiences.. gr8!!  You managed to commute every single day for one year.. but here in Delhi.. not only summers is a problem even winters... it gets dark after 6:00 p.m. then it gets pretty risky to ride as the traffic here is very bad... Once someone hit me from the back and that too when i was riding on the very edge of the road (on the left side) And it happened in broad daylight.. I also read Your blog on rainy season... Alas ! we don't have showers in our office and in fact it is quite difficult to find a place to even change the clothes..    So... That's why I say You did a great job....

When did rainy season become rainy reason?  After I started enjoying getting wet. :-)

@darmesh yadav My strategy to commute in summer is to leave home at or around 7am.   And return home after 7am.    I never tried cycling in the middle of the day, unless it is for  small errands.  for the tips about rainy reason, please read my next blog: http://www.cyclists.in/profiles/blogs/commuting-in-the-rainy-season

Great !!, That's very inspiring.. My office is also about the same distance 54-55 Kms round trip. I have gone just two times. Felt good... but the traffic is a bit problem and the the major problem is the temperature. Its around 43 degree C. Do you also had to face this problem or is it better in Mumbai. I live in Gurgaon and go from there to my office in Delhi. Please do tell how you coped with these issues and ofcourse rainy season is about to come.. so some advice on that also please...

You have almost recovered the cost the cycle and you earned yourself some extra health plus hopefully some joyful moments and experiences.

Keep it up; wish you many many more thousands of kms on the pedal.
