Shifting gears (tampering) of a locked bike.

When we leave our geared bikes in the parking lot, some curious guys may shift gears.  To avoid damage, what I do is to leave it in the lowest speed gear combination, i.e., biggest chain-ring on the cassette (freewheel) side and smallest on the crankset.  On a locked bike, shifting gears in this position will only loosen the gear cables.…

Post-Monsoon Bicycle maintenance

It has been since May, 2010 since I drove my Hero Street Racer. It went through a tonne of problems then - punctured back tyre, loose brakes and odd sounds. The bicycle mechanics were pretty rough with it and so, I moved to the original bicycle shop where I had bought it from. This meant some lugging around but they got the job done. The rains started early, though and I was able to use it only once since.

I moved the cycle out of monsoon storage in August and gave it a clean down but… Continue

anyone give advice on long bicycle tours

Dear All,

Recently I got a lot of help and answers from many members about choice of Hero Genius or Trek 3700/4300 for a longish cycle trip in Kumaon with my family.

We are 50( self), 45( wife) and 18, 15 and 13 yrs. Four of us are fit and one has more enthusiasm than fitness, so we are all looking forward to this trip which should last about 10 days.

We are perhaps cycling about 400+ km totally over mountain roads in Kumaon { no offroading is planned} perhaps 20% to 30% of this… Continue

My bicycle wish

I now share a Hero StreetRacer with my brother. Hopefully, by June 2010, I should have a bicycle of my own. I have been on the lookout through both modern catalogs and some traditional Indian bicycling company catalogs and I thought I should have the BSA SLR.

Going through their website, the closest thing that matched that description was something called the BSA Photon-Ex.

That's the bicycle I'm going…

Placebo punctures

"You've got a flat, dude", said Faisal, and went rolling by. It was high sun, 12 in the noon, and a flat would be a wrong end to a sweet day with the others inside Sanjay Gandhi National Park. The thought of riding through the congested Western Express Highway and the constant sewer stink along half of the route was still more palatable than either taking an autorickshaw or finding a repairman. As it was, I was traveling light...nothing on me, and nothing on the bicycle either. So no spare… Continue

Obscenities with the bicycle

Hm, after much deliberation I decided to do away with the excess luggage of Mudguards and Bicycle carrier that I'd been cycling with ever since I got my bicycle here in Mumbai. There had been no rains, there are no grand drainage leaks on my cycling routes, I haven't been carrying any load on my bicycle carrier, neither are there any children to cycle to school to, or (willing) girlfriends to carry around. No present utility, means no point of it. It was a straightforward decision.

So I… Continue
