"CYCLING TO WORK IN MUMBAI" ;- Peril or cheapest form of "ADVENTURE SPORTS"?

Hi Bikers,

Cycling on the streets of Mumbai at age 49 on an old ancient "Hero-Hawk" is no pleasure to the average motorists eyes nor "upwardly mobile Mumbaikar". The cycle is viewed as a poor mans form of transport if used on the roads during "Peak traffic hours" or a "Rich hobby" when used by early morning cyclists on expensive racer bikes. Commuting to work on a cycle is definitely a big "NO-NO" for any educated upwardly mobile executive or student as it is considered the cheapest mode… Continue

A Ride to Remember!

I had been contemplating the ride for quite some time now. For certain reasons, I wanted to just go to Dhanaulti and come back on my bicycle. Well, knowing fully well that things would not be easy, I wanted to go with a proper group and some kind of backup in case the situation demanded. Thus I started talking about it to various people I knew who loved to cycle.

However, considering my previous experience about planning long rides, I knew that I was in a difficult situation, for… Continue

"CYCLE",Lone survivor of the "Motorized era" in 2209, also "Outliving" it!

The humble "Cycle" was the earliest mechanised transport invention and will also be the last surviving until the existence of humanity. The fossil fuel driven "Petrol Automobile" will definitely disappear once petrol is exhausted and another "Fuel" would have to be invented by humans to keep the "Transport industry" functional. Ultimately, the "Cycle", totally driven on "Human energy" would outlive all other "transport vehicles" as seen in their present avtaar in 2009, being the lone original… Continue

I normally always cycle from my house at Prabhadevi to the Mahalaxmi race-course early in the morning at 0600hrs. While cycling to Mahalaxmi racecourse on Monday(16-11-2009),came across a 65 year old ex-cycling professional who really made me feel embarassed at his physical fitness. Also learnt that some of Maharashtra's best cyclists practice early morning rides akin to me, zooming at 40 to 50Km/Hr on Mumbai's vacant early morning roads. Thanks to Cyclist Mr Filly.Fitter i now feel "VERY YOUNG"… Continue

No Route Just Roads!!

I start tommorow on a 50 odd day tour. Currently thinking of covering Karnataka & Goa, very extensively, but there is no “fixed route”. Don't know, if time is there, then probably cross over to Tamil Nadu, move around to reach the southern end and then enter Kerala and ride up to reach home @ Kottayam somewhere around year end. The plan is to be mostly on the state highways and other smaller roads, avoiding the National Highways as much as possible.

The focus would… Continue
