Profile Information

My current bike model / type:
Trek 4300 for long rides! for commuting i use my 7yr old Hercules twin bow. i also have 2 firefox targets, 1 trek 4 series and 1 merida all gifted and loaned to me by friends and used by my ever growing family of friends etc to get into biking or join me on rides!
My favourite ride so far:
hard to choose between pune to goa, tour in france or bin paise ki yatra in rajasthan!!
A bit about myself:
i've been cycling middle long distance, touring for 10 yrs. i love being outdoors so i also trek, hike, wind-surf, kayak, swim lakes and camp out as often as posible!!
while i love cycling in any and every form, touring, commuting, endurance sport, long distance.... i mainly love that cycling allowed me to find my roots in my country again!

1975 (Air Force Station Hindon - I Got Wings) - I got a cycle when I was about 9 yrs old, in Hindon, near Delhi. More than 30 yrs later and i can still recall the sense of exhilaration at that moment, and remember a lot of details from that day! with the cycling came mobility, liberation and emancipation!
1976-1991 (BOMBAY - Deepfelt Deprivation) - unfortunately we moved to bombay very soon, my cycle was sold, my parents felt bombay was too unsafe for me to cycle in, so it was never replaced.
1992 (PUNE - Making up for Lost Time) - i grew up not knowing how much i missed it, until 15 yrs later, in my late twenties, i moved to Pune!! within the first month i had bought a cycle and by the end of the year i had discovered all the routes in the area that led out to the lakes and into the hills! WOO HOO!
1995-1999 (PUNE - Making Babies) - The bike was abandoned for Babies, gladly this time, to focus my energies on a most fulfilling and irreplaceable experience!
1999-2001 (PUNE - Spreading My Wings Again) - Back on my cycle, i got a renewed sense of emancipation and liberty, during a very trying period spent acquiring a Divorce. I firmly believe that my cycle was a source of strength for me, my character, my soul!
2001-NOW (No Turning Back) - Other than forced breaks to recover from an accident or two, I haven't stopped cycling in these 10 years. i love to tour the countryside on cycle and also enjoy the challenge of training and taking part in organised events like triathlons, Enduro3, Randonneuring etc. Cycling has been a strong factor in my evolution as a human being attempting to live in peace with Nature.

"Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite"--Liberty, Equality, Fraternity..... BY BICYCLE!!

"Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite"--Liberty, Equality, Fraternity

the slogan of the french revolution took on new meaning for rohit and pankaj and our friend mihir ( all between 11 and 14) in auroville!! significantly, also having french connection, as it was founded by a french woman!!

we biked everywhere that we had to go, riding 30-40kms daily on some really khatara rented bikes. after being together for the first 3 days, until we got our bearings and they got familiar… Continue

pankaj's second century (100KM) ride.....

you know it's monsoon when you leave for a century ride at 12 noon! and if you didn't know it yet you can be sure of it when you get caught in a torrential downpour!!
pankaj (my 12 yr old son) and i spent the better part of the morning fixing our new mud guards to the bikes and were ready to leave only at 12pm. until last week it would have been impossible to even conceive of such a late departure but with a wonderful cloud cover and grey skies to protect us from the sun we ventured out at…

start them young... and watch them go!

i am totally blown by my kids.... their enthusiasm, their energy and their endurance!!

Pankaj (12yrs) has been cycling with me regularly (100-150 kms weekly) in the last 4 months, but hadn't done more than 50 kms in a day. Rohit (14 yrs) hasn't cycled for 5-6 months and also hasn't done more than 50 before this. both have been riding with me for many yrs and started long country rides about 4-5 yrs back. apart from slowly building up their physical ability, which is…

ugh... yes... i fell!!

'man overboard'!! or in this case 'woman onroad'!! ugh yes i fell!!

on a training ride for the 300km BRM, we planned to do 220-240 km from pune to satara and back!! 4 of us started from ncl pashan at 9:45 pm, varun, sandeep, gagan and myself, with lights, reflectors adn the rest of it.... except that there were stretches where inspite of the bike lights, the glare of the oncoming traffic made it impossible to see where we were riding!!

fortunately the road is…

your advice is being used by me even before you posted it. I am covering 50km. again. and no recurrence. as i said the temp that day was 4 degrees above the normal and wind was up too. little caution is always desirable. so i take one stop at 35km.

thanks a lot.

You are an experienced rider so will write to you when ever i need some suggestions.

wish you and your friends many happy and fast rides.

how about adding me to your growing circle of friends?

I've been fine. Hope all's well with you :) Thanks for the detailed writeup on the Alan meeting. Insightful!

2nd issue is going a bit slow as I'm still waiting for some writers to send their content in. Good stuff though. Just taking more time than expected.

As for cycling, I've drastically cut it down - no thanks to the weather. Insanely hot by 9.30am :(

G'day Divya
Thanks for taking on the co-ordination role :) I will be in Pune with my wife from 26 March to 10 April for my daughters wedding. It will be our first time in India and will be meeting our son-in-laws(they married in Oz last year) family for the first time so it is all very exciting. It seems the best day for me to meet you guys will be any time on the 1st April. I will be staying with the in-laws in the suburb of Wanwadi. I will have my bike with me so will have some mobility. I organise Audax rides (Alpine Classic Extreme 250km with 4500ms of climbing) here in OZ and have ridden the PBP twice plus organised and ridden the Australian Audax millenium ride in 2001 being 2100kms in 160 hours :) so there could be a bit of experience I could share. Any idea what folk might like to chat about to help me focus the mind :) Looking forward to meeting you all. C'ya Alan
