Event Description

Tour de Mumbai... this time by moonlight... howzatt!

Cool breeze, no heat, little traffic, almost no dust... and a bunch of happy cyclists accompanying you... what more could one ask for, eh?

We continue our series of exploring various parts ofthe city on our bicycles... and enjoying the beauty of this phenomenon called Mumbai... :-)

Date: Saturday night, 24 April 2010

Start point 1: (Outside the HDFC ATM in the lane next to) Inorbit Mall , Link Road, Goregaon West
Start time: 9.30pm

Tentative Route (details later): Link Road - Malad-Kandivli-Borivli - ride around Borivli west including IC Colony, then ride back towards Juhu

End point: Juhu seaface (Chowpatty)
End time: 1.00am, Sunday morn

Had a good ride - especially the little slopes. The low point was when I split up with the gang at Borivali and headed home trying to reach early. Somewhere around Kandivali, hit a pot hole and got a flat. Took about 20 minutes to remove the rear wheel, and swap out the tube - during which time the rest of the gang caught up and went ahead. I had to put in a tube rated for 35c in my 23c tyre - not a very pleasant thing to do - but I didn't want to sit and fix a flat in the middle of the night. I under inflated the tube out of caution, lest the tyre slip out of the rim. Caught up with the gang again near Hypercity, and then carried on home. Good ride, did about 39km, but a quicker pace would've been even better.

Comment by Anil Uchil on April 26, 2010 at 12:29am: At 10.00pm, 17 people started from Inorbit… the initial stretch upto Malad was pathetic, because of the bumper-to-bumper traffic on Link Road (that’s why we used to start all our earlier night rides closer to midnight!)

Birthday boy Vikram had mobiked straight from work and promised to join us in Borivli after picking up his cycle from home… but met up with us in Kandivli itself… Manu and Jaydeep from Nerul joined us in Borivli… 20 people riding together… in a tight bunch… people kept slowing down their cars and bikes to ask us what was going on… :-)

Riding in Borivli was fun… Vikram took us all on a merry ride up and down nice little slopes… with everyone taking things at their own pace, the gang very naturally split up… and pretty soon, there were three groups, two of which were undeniably lost, but still had a lot of fun riding around on their own for a bit… :-)

We regrouped after a bit… guided individual “lost sheep” back into the flock… We bid adieu to the Mira Road and Borivli folks… and the rest of continued towards Link Road… We picked up Mehul from the CCD along the way… then went to Inorbit Mall, where Shammi, Vishal and 3 others were waiting for us…

The gang rode on towards Juhu, bidding goodbye to Annie and Amar at Versova… The ride officially ended around 2.00am at Juhu Chowpatty, outside Ramada…
Aman, David, Raunak, Kailas, Manu, Mehul, Sunil and I continued to ride towards south Mumbai, hunting for food… And at Dadar, we found food… and a little more excitement than we had bargained for… but that’s another story altogether… :-)
A little later, at almost 5.00am, the group dispersed, and Aman, David, Kailas and I started off towards Bandra… Aman said bye at Bandra and zoomed off, while we continued towards Linking Road, the start point of Javier’s ride to Uttan.

Comment by Anil Uchil on April 23, 2010 at 8:46am: After this ride, I'll be joining Javier and gang on the Uttan ride (it's a lovely route, with a couple of good climbs thrown in) :-) ...so I'll just continue riding around Mumbai and land up at Linking Road (Citibank) at 5.30am... :-)
Those who are not particularly keep on sleeping on Satur-night might like to join in... :-)
