Event Description

Guys, we are planning a training ride, either a night ride on morning 13th OCT.

We plan to ride around 40kms. we have decided on 13th Morning Tuesday @ 6am, the streets would be free of traffic and the absence of sun would help in more ways than one. Also tuesday being a holiday (elections) traffic will be less.

A route i had in mind was, Nariman - Malabar hill - Napeansea road - Breach candy -Haji Ali - worli seaface - Bandra Reclamation - BKC - AND BACK TO GATEWAY.

I am attaching a URL kindly check and comment with suggestions..

Sunil - Wish you a safe recovery ... Cast or no cast ... take your time, listen to your body. Physiotherapy will help you a lot to get the range of motion back.

Sunil- I guess if you are considering second opinion try to find a orthopedic surgeon with knowledge of sports injuries. By the way since festival season is on you might have to wait for an appointment till next week.

Basically what I am saying is new studies have showed that putting a cast on such fractures further complicates and delays treatment and patients risk not getting full motion later! This is what the doctor told me

By the time you come out of this cast, you wont have any muscle left on your arm. Get a second opinion from another doctor.

The Radius is exactly what I broke and the treatment mentioned below is exactly what i did! In my case the fracture was easily seen on the X-ray!

*The fracture may not be visible on initial X-rays, but can usually be seen if the X-ray is taken three weeks after the injury.
*Nonsurgical treatment involves using a splint or sling for a few days, followed by early motion.

I am not sure what your doctor is up to! Maybe they need to go back to medical school and get updated with new methods!!

@Sunil.. Robert Jones is definitely a bad fracture with very long recovery period..Surely it must have been hell..

@Rajesh.. I am quite surprised at just a sling being advised for elbow fracture. Have never seen something like this here. I just want to know whether the treatment advised for your elbow fracture was routine approach or a modified one in view of your cycling activity to allow a quick recovery.

Sunil - The actual recovery took 2 months. But I was riding my bike outside in 3 weeks with elbow support wrapped around my elbow.

As I said casts for joints is an old technique! I was simply given a sling and asked to go home! No treatment. They heal on their own once you have figured out it is a simple fracture. He wanted me to move my elbow a few times a day after a week, movement was encouraged. No lifting or weights!!
Unfortunately this was in the US. Orthopedics are awesome here! here is a pic of me training after 3 days!

@Rakesh .. doc advice me to aviod high impact activities .. as far as intensity is concern i did ask him if it is fine to ride stationary bike with avg HR of 180 - 185 bpm ... he gave me green signal for that.. at this point of crisis i am desperately trying to maintain my cardiovascular fitness level as it took lot of time, effort, pain and suffering to get my resting HR down frm pathetic mid 80`s to 65-66 bpm.

@Nishant .. i am aware that 4 week in cast will cause muscle weakness.. but thats alright cause now my primary objective to prepare for marathon. This fracture is not as bad as foot fracture (Robert Jones fracture) which i suffered 22 months back .. i was living in hell for 3 months.

@Rajesh ..recovered in 3 weeks just with a sling and no cast.. Wow thats good to know :-) ..what treatments u took ??.. the orthopedic surgeon .. is he based in mumbai?? .. if yes any contact details??

Why the hell are they putting a cast on your elbow fracture if it is a simple fracture? Glad he did not give you antibiotics for the fracture too! New modern treatments does not use casts for simple elbow fractures. The healing takes longer and you risk losing complete motion of the elbow joint!

Why I am saying is? I went to be really good orthopedic surgeon and the above is what he told me. I experienced similar elbow fracture last year, NO cast, just a sling to be used to support the arm. and I was up and riding my bike in 3 weeks.

Thats bad news Sunil..Atleast the fracture isnt a complicated one. 4 weeks in cast is enough to cause muscle weakness and stiffness. Just a word of caution. Once the cast is removed do take physiotherapy properly and allow adequate time for joint to regain its complete range.
Take care and have a speedy recovery..
